Suggestions for small, really small robots
« on: November 11, 2008, 02:52:53 AM »
Hello all,

I have been very busy with configuring the SRV-1 from surveyor coproration do what my uni wanted it to do and at the same time I have learned much about electronics, embedded systems and robotics in general.

I think the time is ripe now for me to try (emphasize try) and design my own robot. I would like to go for really, really small and I was wondering about the actuators. By looking around I found out that mini servos tend to be unstable. Is there any other actuator other than mini servos which you think can be used in small and lightweight robotics?

I thought of SMA too but, I have never used them  before and from what I can see they have many and quite serious problems at the moment.

Any input would be welcomed :)

Here is a pretty nice guide for a very small, 1 cubic inch, bot. http://www.instructables.com/id/Building-Small-Robots-Making-One-Cubic-Inch-Micro/ Has materials and some instructions. May be worth checking out.
So if the blue wire goes here, then that means...(bzzzt) oops....

Yeah thanks a lot. It surely helps since it is nice seeing many other projects with similar challenges and comments on them. Puts things into perspective. Thanks for your input ang5t.

I think this will be my next robot! I can deal with a small robot, it's the big ones you have to keep on a leash  ;).

That motor they used is amazing! At $30 for two they seem kinda expensive, what do you guys think? How would a non-geared motor work?
