Don't be too depressed about it, speech recognition is becoming re-commercialized, meaning there is money to continue the research . . .

Is this a bad thing?  I'm honestly excited... I've always wanted (and tried multiple times) to set up speech recognition on my computer, but it never had the accuracy that I wanted it to have.  It's surprising that the "brains" of the recognition is just modified programming from the 50s and 60s.  I hope they get recognition up soon.  I want to have my own "Jarvis".   ;)

i don't agree with the conclusions of that article.
speech recognition can currently be done with a *far* greater accuracy than 80%, just not in real time.

for example:

i've also seen demos of voice mail accounts that send transcripts of the conversation by SMS with close to 100% accuracy where dictionary words are used.

if it can be done accurately at present off-line then it is just a matter of time before faster processors and bigger data sets will make this a reality in real time.
