A servo also has position control built in, that is why you cannot just hook up to battery. Note the three wires. One is for the position control. A 555 timer is probably the simplest way to do this,

If your first post is, "I want to build a super complex robot with object recognition, etc..but I have never done programming or electronics...etc." 
Your doing it wrong. Start Simple and Work Up.
