Title: Sensors
Post by: fireintheit on June 27, 2013, 06:12:40 PM
Hi

I am new to robotics and I was hoping to get some advice on sensors. Is there a tutorial where can learn about the different types of sensors.

Start by clicking on "Robot Tutorial" in the upper right corner of this page. Lots of basics to get you started.
Next browse and read through the many threads in these forums. Then go the the links listed in those threads and read more. Googe/Wiki search for terms and other info you don't understand.
Also, Pololu, Adafruit and SparkFun have some good beginner info and tutorials about different sensors. These are well worth reading.

a lot depends on the size and purpose of your robot but i find hall effect best for motor/wheel position and ir best for collision avoidance. led/phototransistor works good to detect close proximity or edge of table. modulated ir sensor for detecting objects further away. ultrasonic are also good for that but weigh 100x more.

red/blue led with ldr worked good for determining color in my m&m sorting sumo. tcs230 color sensor also works good but costs a lot more and is bigger. for really big robots cmos or ccd camera is common and if money is really no object lidar and radar.

You can browse the ebay or the amazon store to ask the seller whether they have the Tutorial.the sensor like HC-sr04 is just charge for one or two bucks.I think it is worthwhile For getting the manual.
