Title: Ordered Parts to build the $50 Beginner Robot
Post by: Poolrad on July 10, 2007, 06:25:05 AM
Well with the tools it was really $150, I also didn't skimp on anything and bought the best of the options provided for all the stuff. This will be my first attempt at building a robot, I've worked on programmer bots before when I was doing my Masters in IT at RPI. This however will be my first home grown attempt.

Question though, is there another material that is recommended to be used for beginner wheels besides cardboard? I want something a bit stronger in case my dog takes a swipe at it (and cardboard just doesn't look cool)...

I bought two HS-311 servo's that I will modify as suggested.

Just trying to think of a better wheel material than the original recommended cardboard. I don't want it too advanced yet, still in the KISS mode while learning on my first made bot.

you could order some foam wheels.

I stuck 5 cd's together, but mounting it perfect was hard, cause they forgot the big red servo horn.

in the end I used teh wheels from an old rc car.

I recommend getting the large foam wheels. I bought 4 of them about 4 years ago for $20, and have used them on like 10 different robots since.

They probably have another 10 years left in them . . .

If you want something free, I highly recommend instead of cardboard, JIF peanut butter lids with rubber bands around them for extra traction. :P
