Title: Human-Robot Relationships Documentary
Post by: aaronrosenthal on March 12, 2008, 06:45:18 AM
Hi everyone

I am conducting some research into human-robot relationships, for a documentary I am developing for Target TV, a British TV production company.

I am hoping to find out whether any of you know of anyone who has used a robot to replace a lost loved one, e.g. a family member or husband or wife. Is the technology at anywhere near the level required for such a robot? Maybe someone is using a rather crude, basic robot to fill the hole in their life?

I was also wondering whether you know of anyone who has used a robot as part of their sex life? David Levy published a book last year stating that humans will soon be having sex with robots - is anyone already doing this?

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated - please post here or email me at [email protected]

Thanks

Aaron Rosenthal

Isn't having sex with a robot considered masturbating? Heh.

If you're good, really good, then you could make an android that would share some characteristics with the 'lost loved one'...

Edit: Haven't heard of anyone doing any of this, though.

Some people go into building robots to cope with sadness from a loved one

as for making a realistic robot that can actually replace a family member , that is not really possible for the average guy. The robots and androids you see on TV shows are either nonexistent or extremely expensive. And the average guy does not have that kind of money or the experience. I mean look at Honda ASIMO. Tons and tons of funding went into it and it still not a replacement for a person.

A man on this forum has gotten close though, his name is  Le Trung and his robot is Aiko

Thanks for the feedback guys.

I'm currently reading through the thread by Le Trung about his fembot Aiko - lots to get through but all very interesting. It looks like robotics are really advancing!

Any other feedback is very welcome...

Depends on how you define a 'robot' ;)

For those who speak Russian, you might enjoy the song 'Robot' by Tatu . . . hehe . . .

Read the testimonials on that site . . . could be what you are looking for.

dude you are my hero. and thats one of my favs now

back on topic. I dont think this counts as a robot, but I've seen a picture of a pc with unsayable things in the 5.25" slots.

Look I consider having sex with a robot is a little bit sick, why cause if you need sex you go to a whore... (sorry...)
There are lots of things going on here, robots is the least. The whole humanity is having problems!!! Everything seems to be done by Internet,
teleview, telesound, telef@ck but this is sick. Man has really lost the contact with the opposite sex... That can be a hell of a problem...
You see it's this "we have everything" which leads us there. A five years old can watch porn. But, for a man for example the desire for a woman is much less if he can see a woman naked from such an early age!!! Then it comes also to fear. Dating an unknown woman, is very very hard for the first time and it's highly possible you fail, but then it you have porn, sex robots and so on... no problem and for some not a problem at all!!!

Man your societies are sick, having more technology in our life by this way is the worst we can do... direct contact is needed it can't be replaced!!!
Internet is fun, but when it comes to real life then what???
It may sound fun (people with robots - hehehehe) but it's a problem...
Sex - opposite sex (and same sex for some....... darn.... I'm not racist but hell this is another big theory for me...)
That's my point of view

BTW sorry for my language, I don't mean to be rude, but hiding before your finger doesn't really help here...

lookslike this is goin to be a social talk

,,but i have a question for you

you just provide the world a technology ,they use it the way they want to

so making a humanlike robot that you can love and then marry and have sex with isnt something wrong as long as this thing is like humans

,,or am i wrong?

someday robots would be just like humans, and maybe more developed than us  so ur gonna beg for a robot girlfriend  ;D

The ethical perspective on this will most probably change when we're used to having robots on our society... Todays views will probably be interesting to read around that time :)

"Having sex with a robot? Why not?"

........... the 50$ robot will have a new meaning....

Well, I think that robots will never act as humans.... And never will be human...
Life is not meant in a machine... There are lots of maybe so we can never be sure.
Look marrying robots and so on is what exactly I was talking about... Marriage is not home chores and sex, it's love, love, chemistry between the fresh which is so imperfect...
Our lives are becoming more and more luxurious... The bad thing is that flirting, being with a woman ( I'm a man... so this is the same for the opposite), marriage and so on, needs sacrifices... which more and more people are unwilling to do due to the fail sense of comfort and luxury when in fact the wealth of the world is one the hands of only very few ... People have forgotten what is love...
And love needs sacrifices... The whole thing is a trap, leading us more and more to nothing far from the nature of the human being...
Having a robot (the easy way of doing things with little sacrifices) is way wrong!!! Way wrong!!!
Please consider this matter more seriously... For the sake of the 50$ robot....
Seriously now, consider it...
It a huge conversation, lots of opinions and lots of matters and topics...
I'm very willing to have this conversation so keep it up folks!!!

hey Tricky, nice talk and yea i believe in what you say about love
but howcome you know that bots cant be humans oneday?
ive read somwhere over the net that there are labs that implement feeling into robots
do you knw what does it mean? a robot will be able to feel (sadness, happyness, greed,LOVE)
its all in the algorithms
i know a bit few about this stuff but when you read that people are doing this then what about a hundred years from now?
you never know.
and that thing i meant
,ONLY when robots are like us humans then including them into our society is no problem at all
,why not marry a female bot when she is able to love you for who you are and she has her dignity and bla bla bla ??

nice conv by the way

its just my point of view

I don't really believe robots can be humans, They may look alike do and behave exactly the same, but there gonna be always weaknesses...
That's my point of view...
We MUST see and defy which is the role of the robot. In ancient Athens there were thousands of slaves serving everyday every Athenian. But Athenians actually was a far more modern society that ours... why? Because they were daily producing culture and knowledge.
In a "modern" society like ours we can't have "legally" slaves we call them the working class. If robots replace the working class, humans will be focused   on producing knowledge. BUT knowledge needs thinking people!!! If thinking people start to exist then power can't be concentrated on few hands, so HERE is a BIG problem!!! They know it, so they focus on recreating a human being, with no actual feelings replacing the human in the society and telling you: You want a life, you want a mate, you want, you want... pay... How you pay??? Work like a slave!!!
As technology advances more cons and pros appear... The thing is that we have the proper humanistic education to cop with!!!

the feelings are preprogrammed and limited to certain events , such as if pressure sensor = 1 then robot is sad

but one may argue that humans themselves have "preprogrammed algorithms"!

i dont know what algorithms are out there for robot personalities, but how about an algorithm that adds on itself?
like the bots who learn when they see somthin ???

i dont have much info about these stuff, so ,id still wait n see what can be done in robotics, just expect everything to happen

Exactly.

If all we are is genetic material (preprogrammed responses), and experiences (learned responses) then all we are is robots. I have no doubt that one day we will have the technology to have robots mimic humans very convincingly. The question is, will they ever have the capability to become self aware and have free will?

I would not be suprised if the Japanese have robots that can have sex. they are really into love dolls into japan that sell for as much as $6000.00.

Why man??? Why??? I don't argue if the robots are able one day to act like human, I argue about this free will...
Get it more socially... Why to made something with free will when you don't have it??? Why??? Start having free will and you are ok??? Then make something to have free will.... And I'm talking about you, I talk about every single person on this planet including me!!!
It's not a bad thing we want to conquer... It's a bad thing we are so on "my own and noone else"
Make a robot to serve you, make a robot what will do anything for you that takes you away from your true human nature... Don't concentrate on robots, sooner or later they will be more developed, but we must first ensure our self indignity and respect!!!
Please this is serious, just focus right people...

Thanks, Lefteris.....
