It gives you a reading of heat in a 16x4 grid in front of the sensor. I imagine it can be used to measure movement of people/animals, as well as detection of presence and direction of fire. There are a number of robot competitions that include fire fighting as an event.

Primarly for paranormal studies. Ectoplasm has known endothermic properties so ghosts are best imaged in the thermal domain.
