MechWarrior (the video game, new release!)
« on: July 10, 2009, 12:09:23 PM »
When I was a kid I absolutely loved MechWarrior 2. Apparently the 5th game is now coming out, and the video is amazing!

video

more info:
http://pc.ign.com/articles/100/1002164p1.html

and MechWarrior 4 is being released for free!

Why am I posting this? Well, because just maybe I'm working on a secret biped MechWarrior robot with rocket launchers and airsoft cannons and will upload all designs and Axon code . . . just maybe ;)

that game looks awsome, and it would be the most visited post on the site if you followed through on your mechworrior robot, it would be incredable

Speaking of bipeds, it seems that you don't need all those expensive powerfull servos to build one. Of course, size matters. But someone called Ayu was able to pull it off using only 9 gram servos and custom made brackets from aluminum sheet. He also replicated the Robonova controller, how cool is that? So, if you really want to build a small biped and you have about $65 for the 17 servos, you'se set!

Want to see it? Here's the link:
http://robosavvy.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=15649

Edit: the robot's weight is 420g and the servos weigh 323g!!! that means all the metal and controller weigh less than a hundred grams!

I had trouble believing it worked due to lack of video . . .

But I did some math, and it turns out that it can lift itself using just one leg. So it can probably jump using both legs . . .

(wait a minute, it isn't a mech?!)

Sorry to say, last night I made a mistake. The servos are 9 grams each, so 17 servos makes 153g... Why I typed 323? Because that is the weigh for the 17 servos package if you order them from HobbyCity... I guess I was too tired to think clearly... So the weight of the electronics and metal is 267g, more realistic this time. And of course, there is no battery on the robot at this time, altho LiPos can be added in the soles of the feet.

About the video. The IS a video in the first post from that link (Robosavvy forum) showing the robot doing a balance on one leg (I hope that is the proper description of the pose) so yeah, it works.

(and if you dress it nicelly in an armour, it will look more like a mech...)

I love mechwarrior and even old school battletech from back in the day. I saw some of your posts about you tiny little terror your designing for mech warfare on some other forums :) I want to build one as well but thats a lot of expense for a robot like that. I'll start counting my pennies or something :)

hehe and I can finally play mechwarrior 4 plus the expansion pack because I still have the expansion but someone "borrowed" my mechwarrior 4 disks so I never got to finish the game.

Well, its finally out!

However like a billion people are downloading it, and its almost 2GB of files, so you'll have to use bit torrent.

I included the .torrent files attached in a zip file below - I recommend using uTorrent v2.0.1.

After downloading the full files, convert them to a .zip. The two smaller files are patches.

For more information, see http://mektek.net/projects/mw4/index.html
(DO NOT use their MTX program, they say its really slow and will crash often)

In other entirely unrelated to robot news, Starcraft II was just announced to be released on July 27th. yaaaay!

I just realized I'm stuck with playing only on the Asian servers . . . do you realize how crazy good (obsessed :P) Koreans are?!?!?

Oh and btw, the Starcraft II link above, if you pre-order through Amazon, you get a free beta key. In other words, you can start playing right away.

Ok, I just got the game working . . . but can't figure out how to install the patches.

I assume you need the MTX program to do it, but it doesn't work. Probably because of this:

VIRUS WARNING!!!!!!!

The Mechwarrior 4 that you can download by bittorrent is infected with a virus.

People had reported their anti-virus going crazy on it, but MekTek was convinced it was just a false alarm.

Well, today Norton started reporting this virus under various file names on my laptop:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/security_response/writeup.jsp?docid=2004-080910-5958-99

Scanning the MW4 folder revealed that MW4Mercs.exe is infected.

Its a relatively harmless virus - considering Norton can detect it. I've been playing the game for a few days now . . .
