How to define the number of arms in gripper?

Hello,

I have a question regarding design of grippers. Does anybody know any resources that explains how to calculate number of arms (and minimum required surface) in a gripper to take and hold a part?

It really depends on what you want your robot to pickup.
For example if you want the griper to grab a pencil and write with it you probably will need 3 fingers.
Look at how your hand works when doing a specified task! ;)

Hi Voyager2,
Thank you for the comment. I am doing a process planning for a CNC machine. At the end of process, a robotic arm has to hold the part and enables the machine to cut the remaining area. I am not going to design or build the robot, but in my project I need to address a solution for it. The maximum weight of my part is one pound.
