Advice on wheels and motors?
« on: July 17, 2007, 04:17:09 AM »
Hello all.

I'm new to this forum and hope that someone might be able to give me some advice on a project I am currently making.

I am building a stage prop that I need to add a drive system to. It is a suitcase that needs to drive itself off stage (in a straight line)

The area I have in which i have to place the motor/gears and axle is 150mm by 50mm.
The wheels can be max diameter of 50mm
Overall weight of completed unit could be 6kg max

This is a prop that will have a lot of use so it needs to be as strong as possible.

The questions I have are:
What is a safe axle diameter for the weight
Where is a good place to get aluminium with rubber tread wheels 50mm diameter (heavy-duty)
What is the best motor/gear system for the project 6V (compact strong/cost effective)

Any help or advice is much appreciated.

Cheers

Joe Hague

Depends on desired velocity and acceleration, too.
This tutorial should help you calculate it:

(its a bit math heavy, let me know if you have questions)

Whats your price range? How loud can it be? How fast does it need to go?
if you can answer those questions I could help you more but in the mean time I would suggest one of the 28mm Gearbox, RS-385 Motor series http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/c/3086-BaneBots.aspx by BaneBots. You would not need to worry about an axle or bearings as they are on the gearbox itself. For wheels I would suggest these http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/4280-Light-Foam-Wheel-2-x-0-40-.aspx with these mounting hubs http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/3564-Mounting-Hub-6mm-pair-.aspx

hope that helps
