servo position feedback?

Hello, just wondering if this is posible, manually turning a servo to a position and having the microcontroller tell you the positon of it? 

If so, that would help me out alot with programming and not having to kept scruwg with the servo values.  :D

open the servo and hook up the pot's cursor to an adc.

thats what i was about to say, taking apart all my servos to find their position is just insane! :P

Yes. But not in 25 words or less.

You need to design and fabricate a digital protractor. An shaft encoder. There are many ways to accomplish this, optical, magnetic strips, et cetera. Most of them beyond the standards of precision available to a guy working in his basement with Harbor Freights less expensive machine tools. All requiring the ability to design electronics gizmos.

There are 'robot servos' you can buy that can do this. These are popular with the bipeds you can buy on the market now . . . just google around. But of course, they are more expensive . . .
