Title: how can i build programmable linear slides?

i need to build a rack linear actuator without a use of servo.I'm looking something with coils or something else like this...any ideas?

Best idea right at the moment... Spec out what you need, how much weigth to carry/move, what voltage, what power is available, purpose etc.

i intend to hook it on the axon..and i want something really small (2-3 inches long).i only want to move the rack without weight.

A DC motor with a rack and pinion is probably the easy way - it would take quite some power to do this with a solenoid.
