Title: Student Project Survey

Hello everyone,

We are a group of students at Lehigh University completing our senior capstone project in which we design a product and create a business to sell that product.  Our group is designing a universal robotic gripper for small parts to be used in manufacturing.  We're currently looking for information on existing technologies, and their failings, in order to develop a unique concept that solves these problems.  If you are a professional in this industry, we request that you please answer the following questions.

1. What is the size range of the parts you grip?
2. What technologies do you currently use?
3. What do you like and dislike about these technologies?
4. Would you be open to replacing your existing technology with a new and novel solution?

We ask that you answer these questions by either replying to this thread or via private message.  We understand that some information in this industry is confidential.  If this is the case, please tell us why, as that will help further our understanding of the industry.  We also ask that you include some description of your credentials along with your response.

FWIW, one common kind of "gripper" that deals with fairly small parts is a "pick and place" machine, used to assemble electronic circuit boards.
These typically use vacuum suction to pick up parts and linear X/Y gantries to move to the right place.
You may be able to get some insight in this application at an electronics manufacturing forum.
