please check eagle design of $50 board for me :)
« on: March 02, 2009, 01:50:58 AM »
i have this $50 board from webbots tutorial http://www.societyofrobots.com/member_tutorials/node/26 i modified it to run off one battery by taking out the "motor power" header and linking the part where it was to the 9V power traces. i have attached 2 pics of the eagle file and the eagle file. have i done this right? if not please post corrections. thanks in advance.
and i was thinking of making a "$50 robot kit" would that be alright with you admin? and you too webbot? and ofcoarse i would put the respective web address on the pcb ;)

Since you're only using one power source take out all of the (M) headers (PD2(M)...PB0(M) on the left and PB5(M)...PB1(M) on the right) - you no longer need those and they're just making the board unnecessary larger.

I hope you're not going to use 9V batteries. Change the 9V text to say something else, so it doesn't confuse anyone.

The green things you can't remove are the headers in the schematic and you can't delete them in board view (you get an error if you try that). Switch to schematic view and delete them there.

I guess you could do it in paint, some people actually design whole PCBs that way.

latest one uploaded. the servo bus should be the one on the right, right?
do you guys think the $50 robot would be good as a kit?

If people wanted to buy a kit, they would just go for the roboduino.

yea good point. but i mean people who dont have enough money for the roboduino and dont know if they'll continue in electronics/robotics?

Well... if you could find a way to produce the kits at a price less than the roboduino. Although your idea of an entire $50 kit (with servos and sensors etc), if you can get it around $50, might be a hit.

i dont know about the servos because over here no where sells them and online they come to about $20-40 for one! but i guess i could get discounts if i bought them in packs of like 6-8.

and one more thing i couldnt find was a way to stop oxidization from occuring on home etched pcbs? anyone know of a spray of something similar? or could i just use something like lacquer?

You can use lacquer or you can tin the traces. Tinning the traces is better because it helps with soldering. There's electroplating and chemical plating, look into it. But if this is for a kit then you'll simply buy them from a PCB fabrication house, they'd be cheaper. For your own prototypes you may simply do nothing, it's not like you expect your $50 to be running around 10 years from now :)

he you've got a point there. for tinning the traces ill have a go at the solder wick method. and with the lacquer method if you lacquer the traces before soldering can you still solder on the board?
and does the eagle file look good? ive looked it over and cant find anything bad?
but before i consider it as kit im still waiting for the ok from admin.
