Title: Dangers of Soldering To Sealed Acid batteries?

Hey guys,

I am going to have to be soldering a few wires (no current drawn obviously) to SLA batteries in a few days and I was wondering if there are any other dangers I should be worried about besides not applying too much heat from the soldering iron to the terminals too long.  I don't want to destroy my SLA batteries or me for that matter! x(

Nope no dangers. Just don't use a cheap soldering iron, as that will (as you said) apply heat for too long.

Set your iron to max heat, and be quick about it.

Should I use the usual soldering method of heating up the terminal first and then applying solder or should I drop a blob of solder onto the wire and terminal?

Neither . . .

Attach the wire to the battery terminal before hand, and secure it well. Then as you you heat up both the wire and the terminal at the same time with the iron, hold the solder against the wire-terminal joint until it melts as desired. Make sure it melts securely on the terminal and not just on the wire.
