Hey smash! Nice going with the "HER" thing LOL! But hey, to get back to the orginal question looking for printers and gaming controllers is what I would look for. Printers have nice motor drivers and stepping motors as well as gears and usable parts. Another thing is electronic toys, great for hacking!!!! Just keep in mind that dumster diving is a great idea as long as the ladies don't find out ;D ;D ;D

Printers have nice motor drivers
Motor drivers as in DC motor drivers or stepper motor drivers ?
( I have two broken printers downstairs ;D HOORAY!!! )
-
airman- depends. why dont you take it apart and see what motors it has ;D
-
I took an epson printer apart just 2 days ago. It had 2 identical stepper motors that i salvaged and i also kept the power converter inside.
I didnt bother with the electronic components because theyre not really that expensive and the whole process of de soldering is annoying and also trying to resolder something with a very short leg length is also not the easiest thing in the world.
I plan on making my own stepper motor driver with mcu - mosfets. Although I probably wont use them for a while, they are going to be too big for anything i do in the near future.
I also kept a ir receiver/detector that i found inside of it, I presume it is to detect wether paper has been fed or not but will work well for an encoder reader.
I also kept the gears but i'll probably never use them since gear kits are usually a lot easier to work with
-
yea well my friends dads companies name is "wilkinson printers" :D they've got a huge freakin pile of broken printers...his dad goes with a TRUCK every week fills it up and dumps it. im gonna ask him for a laser printer.

i dont know. is there anything inside? or it just the case? (http://www.hardwareforums.com/images/smilies/rolleyes.gif)
-
both towers where intact to everything inside. The cases are basically useful for my chassis but anything else useful? I also found the rest of the computer. :D
nothing looked useful on the keyboard or on the screen though. :(
-
if they work you could use them for programming your robot ;D.
-
thnx that helped alot. ;D
-
no what trumpkin meant is that you could use the computers to connect to the programmer hardware
Meaning write the software on that computer and upload it from that computer to a separate microcontroller.
