but its soooo inefficient and lacks room for a solar panel . . .

I've already seen it somewhere, (dunno if it was here or not).
But there will need to be some sort of very high density battery, because there is no place for something big...
Or maybe one battery in every bol and put them in parallel.

well the only place you could stick a solor panel is on the outter sides of those "wheel" things and in the first few inches of the arms (the small part where the arm doesnt expand. But I dont see that design really taking off at all. They would have a total solar output of like 5 volts at extremely low amperes. They would be able to move maybe about 30 feet, and then have to trickle charge the batteries for about 20 hours lol

But this would be a good initial application for man size nuclear power. Martian spelunking that is...
