Left it laying on the table, while ON and melting or burning it.

when you are concentrating so hard on getting your solder perfect that the iron melts into the power cord.

holding a part in place and reaching for the iron without looking. I've done that at least three times and burned my hand each time....

I don't solder in shorts any more..... dropped the iron from the table and it stuck to my leg. Not for long as I screamed and ripped it off but left a nasty burn.

Well once the black smoke that really smells starts going every where you immediatly stop and look around to see what has happened, then the first thing that jumps into your head is clean the iron, clean the iron hurry up and clean the iron.

But in answer to the electrocution question no it has never got to that stage.

That makes me shiver when i think of the iron getting stuck to your leg, or for anyones for that matter.

Its not like I left it there for a long time or anything. It just didn't glance off and hit the floor I had to smack the iron off my leg. So it wasn't on my leg for even a few seconds just longer then a normal glancing contact. I was moving to catch the iron anyway just redirected when the iron stopped moving and forgot to care about the carpet :)

Definatly not.

Is it just me or do other people immediatly think of their soldering iron or other tools they hurt them self with. e.g. when i cut my hand with my dremel i wiped the blood off before i went to the docotors,(so it would not rust).

My theory behind this is that alot of student hobbiests spend alot of money on Soldering irons and other tools and we cannot afford to get new tools immediatly if something hhas happened to the old ones.

some years ago, I was still using the suction bulb to desolder my joints. at one time, right after sucking a joint, i pointed the bulb to my face and squeezed it. i don't know what i was doing. molten solder came flying out of the bulb right into my face. luckily i wear glasses.  :-\

Many years ago when I was an apprentice, I did some soldering on a live mains transformer.
Thank god for circuit breakers :-)

As a technician would say, "'Must've been an electrician." Just kidding on that one, but wow, you're very lucky to be around right now. I love my field, never really have to deal too much with AC mains, mainly just low current DC systems.

On another note, I myself (I can't believe I'm saying this) tested to see if an iron was hot, but not with my hand... the area right above my upper lip, yes it was stupid, but late nights + young of age + brilliant idea = very stupified child. Ah, the younger days, oh how I do not miss them. :D

It was my first day of soldering a few years ago. I unplugged the soldering iron, and wanted to clean it. So after a few minutes I picked it up (on the metal part) and it burned my hand. I threw the iron down and ran to the sink. I then smelled burning rubber. Went to the work bench, saw it burning a rubber tubing material. I picked it up again (with the metal part again), placed it on the table, and now have burns on my hands.
