Speed Control help

Hello everyone, great forum you have here.

Well I always wanted to build a robot, but either never had time or money.
We'll now I have time & no money.   But I got the biggest part.
I got a electric wheelchair runs great but it's alittle beat up.
It has the charger onboard, new batteries, and the price was right.
Plus it will put a 300lb man a pretty good speed.  And I read here that they are good setups to start.
I pulled the joystick box off & opened it up  ;D 
From the control board to the joystick there are 5 wires. 
My question is could I remove the joystick & hook a remote right up to it, or will I have to buy or build a speed control

I'm going to start with a lawnmower / snowblower 
Yes I see alot of people doing it  but I just gota jump on the bandwagon.
I'm going to take it a step above all the internet setups by adding a deck lift. Then for the winter I have a small 2cycle snow blower that i'm going to replace the mower with.

from what I've heard people have put in their own speed control


BUT

open up the controller and upload pics of the inside circuit parts ( where all the electronics are) take lots of pics and then we'll help you better

Ya that guy really doesnt show what he did. And the control I have is different.
My background has all gas cars afew planes & a heli  so i'm alittle out of my field here, But can learn anything.
Don't want to add the pic as they are huge so you can see them clear.

hmmm...the pics are a bit blurry but i have done this before and hooked up my computer joystick to a five digit keypad...so it is possible but hard..

I'm going remote control  not sure how a keypad would help me.
Will be getting a 4ch radio next week. 
As for the lift on it I think im going with a threaded rod like on a cnc.
Fast easy & FREEEEEEEEEEEE   I love that word.
What I was thinking was use servo wires & cut the joystick off.
Try & find a wire control diagram & hook right to the receiver.
Do you think this would work >?<

NO

ok the reciever is giving out a pulse which is will work for the servos only! The controller might take a pulse but it probably takes a different pulse and probably operates differently. don't do it

If the controller you are talking about is a speed controller for a dc motor than it will operate just like a servo (at least from a control stand point) so you can send the same signals to a motor controller that you can to a servo and the controller will convert that signal into something the motor understands (so basically a dc motor with a controller is just a really expensive modded servo)

I found this. 
Now I'm not sure my idea will work.
What it looks like is a old manual speed control off a rc car.
The # on the control panel are Perry + Giles Pilot Type # D49669/4
But if I can't wire this cheap I'll have to make a servo plate that will let both servos swing.
Really easy idea but it ill be big & ugly, and I will also lose function of the joystick its self.

what you want is a very powrful ESC.

electric speed controller

it takes a servo imput and drives the motors based on that

but sadly they are pretty expensive, unless you can take the drivers from your control board
