Title: connecting the SFE laser module to the Axon microcontroller
Post by: mnrobo on November 17, 2008, 10:31:52 PM
I would like to connect an SFE laser module (http://www.robotshop.us/sfe-red-laser-module-ttl-1.html) to the Axon microcontroller, but am not quite sure how to go about it.  The laser has four wires (red, black, green and white) while the Axon inputs are 3-pin; is connecting all four wires required to control the laser?  I do not know very much about the electrical side of things, so any help with this would be appreciated.

Ok, I think i found the answer to my question; it sounds like the white wire is the digital out on the controller, with the black and red being + and -.  The green is supposedly ignored (http://www.trossenrobotics.com/store/p/5605-Laser-Module-Red-with-TTL-Control.aspx).  If anyone could tell me why this is, I'd still be interested in that info.  Just to clarify, I can connect the black, red and white to one of the digital slots on the Axon, correct?  Thanks.

Looking at the schematic (http://www.robotshop.us/content/PDF/sparkfun-red-laser-schematic.pdf) pin 2 is just connected to ground with a 10K ohm resitor. This could be used as a pulldown resistor if connecting to something that provided Vcc and open on the signal pin 1. For use with a uC, you do not need that. So for use with the Axon, you would use:

Pin 1: Signal
Pin 2: N/C
Pin 3: Gnd
Pin 4: Vcc
