Title: Sum of Forces
Post by: vidam on January 23, 2008, 11:09:23 AM
Along the y axis at 90 degrees I have a force of 1708.51 N. Suppose I want to find the Force in the x direction at an angle of 45 degrees and the Force vector in the y direction at the same angle.

Fx = F * cos (45) = 1708.51 * cos (45) = 1208.9 N
Fy = F * sin (45)  = 1708.51 * sin ( 45) = 1208.9 N

I noticed that F = Fx + Fy = 2416 N. This does not add up to my original Force magnitude of 1708.51. Can someone explain to me why this happens?

Never mind, I found the answer to my question. I had forgotten about using pythagorean theorem

hypotenuse = sqr_root(b*b + c*c)

Ow I wanted to tell you the answer x3
Just yesterday we reviewed force diagram (vectors).
