you cant really take it out. i think.

if you cant then cut off the part of the pot that's supposed to go in that hole

if i have a drill cant i drill it out. make it rounder so that the large gear can rotate freely.

yes but it'll weaken the gear. it's already plastic and weak

you should be able to pop it out with some needle nose.
I had trouble with metal geared servo's with a ball bearing, it did not want to come out, and you can just cut the pot head off, like ed said

if you're afraid of that then you could do this
http://www.instructables.com/id/ESCV6JIWXGEP2864QT/

just do what they say. when they say solder resistors to wires. do it. i tried to be cool and solder it directly to the pcb. well now IDK if teh servo works. it's all finicky

you've never used servos ever?

I always do this method, it always works!  Just make sure to use precision resistors with a tolerance of 1% or 2%, more than that it gets the servo confused slightly. I once used a 5% tolerance  resistor unknowingly and all that happened was i had to send a pulse of 153 to center it . a pulse of 103 to make it go to the leftmost position, a pulse of 203 to go to the rightmost position
