Title: Sonar preferrences
Post by: SeagullOne on October 12, 2008, 07:57:59 PM
I'd like to know if anyone has any preferences for ultrasonic range sensors for me. My robot, NINA, is coming into fruition as far as construction and programming are concerned, but no sensors so far (except her stereoscopic cameras).

Because NINA is a big bot, (its base is maybe about two and a half feet wide, I think), I'm going to need a good sonar sensor for a wide obstacle detection. I've done some research, but I have no hands-on experience with sonar. Should I use Ping)))? Devantech? Any from the EZ series? Anyone?

Oh, my application is mainly indoor use and should be flexible for different sized rooms (such as a living room, a bedroom and passing through hallways).

Along with sonar, my robot will also have four IR sensors and four bumper switches to back up the readings.

Thanks in advance!

Loren

The Maxbotics sensors are available in 5 different beam shapes with varying sensitivities.  The EZ0 has the widest beam, with EZ4 the narrowest.  Most users seem to prefer the EZ1 for general use.  One thing I particularly like about their sensors is the ability to run off 3.3V or 5V power source.
