Robotic arms
« on: November 05, 2011, 05:13:14 AM »
Hi,
We are building a robot that requires us to lift an object from a distance of about 1.5 m using image processing.
The arm needs to be extremely fast as the arm is for a competition and time is of the essence. We are considering using a 5 DOF arm with 4 rotational joints and one prismatic joint. 2 rotational joints are used at the base for yaw and pitch ( ie to rotate the arm along the z axis and the x axis). The arm is composed of 2 pieces and which are connected to each other by means of a rotational joint. One end of one of the arms are attached to the base. The end of the entire arm has an end effector which is connected to the arm by the means of a rotational joint. The prismatic joint is places on the second piece of the arm to enable it to extend to reach the desired object.
We were considering using servo motors but the ones that we needs are well out of our budget. We are now considering using stepper motors which will ensure we have enough torque and speed.

We would love to know if you guys have any other solutions that are cost effective.
The main objective is to have the arm mounted on a moving platform that can grab an object of interest using image processing while in motion.

We would highly appreciate any information.
Regards,
The BNM Robocon team.
