In the infared emiitter/detector circuit, T1 is the for the LED? and L1, for for the reciever?

also the DIP LM358 has 8 pins, which, according to the schematic, do I connect, from where the + is to the VCC (pin 8) and the - to the GND (pin 4), if so then the other 6 pins alone?

L1 is the LED. T1 is the reciever transistor.

BTW, the photo-transistor circuit does not need the op-amp if you are just going to wire it to a uC input. Just tie the phototransistor emitter to ground and pull the collector up to Vcc with a 4.7K resistor (or there abouts), and then tie the collector to the uC input. Viola! Easy, and it works great.

The amplifier is only required if you are measuring really small signals. If you get great signals without the amplifier, you don't need to bother with it.
