Whats the ultimate robot store?
« on: April 04, 2008, 08:29:48 PM »
Hi, I'm new here, and all those stickys at the top make me kind of scared to post  :o

Anyways, I come from an RC background, and a little bit of robots with a 2-servo controlled robot were working on in school. I know the basics, how to make a servo continuous rotation, mechanicals, stuff like that. But what I found really helpful in the RC world is find a huge online superstore with nice pictures and descriptions. It took me a while to find a RC one that wasnt full of crap. Is there an online store with quality robot items that I can trust? Thanks!

Oh and might as well post pics of the robot were building at my school. I go to the top high school in the nation so we get to play with lots of cool stuff  ;D

Board was designed by one of our teachers, we use Picaxe/Basic Stamp to program

Robots are a bit different than RC in that it utilizes a wide variety of electrical and mechanical components, many of which were not originally designed for robotics.  It's going to be difficult to find a big superstore.... For example, Digikey and Mouser have millions of electronic components, whereas McMaster-Carr or Stock Drive have hundreds of mechanical components.  You are best served from buying from a group of companies... My favorites are Sparkfun, Parallax, Pololu, Jameco, and
Trossen Robotics, just to name a few.

calculate which motors you need
http://www.societyofrobots.com/RMF_calculator.shtml

and make sure you get a gearhead motor

Jameco is not the best for buying gearhead motors. Look for tamiya gearboxes or just search solarbotics ( i think) for gearhead motors
