Hi,
Use lethal force
If you've got a Dremel or similar tool, a small router bit should get you there in a minute.
If not, a pair of pliers and a firm grip should do wonders.
If you still haven't killed the servo after the above, post (readable) photos of the exact part and its surroundings.

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?

Use a 7/32 drill bit . Do not over drill or else you have messed up the entire main gear!!! just make sure that the excess material is cleaned out before putting everything back together.

make sure you center punch it first...
otherwise you will take off some teeth with a stray bit..

no need to center punch it. They are plastic gears, and there is that slot for the bit to go into in addition to there being a ring around it!

I had this problem too, not being able to get that bit out of the gear. There is however an easy solution, after gluing the potentiometer in place, just take some wire snips or a sharp knife and cut the tab of the potentiometer off. This should do the job as well as taking out the part of the gear, which in some cases is impossible without drilling or brute force.
You could also have read the tutorial until the end, checked out the links and have found
this forum post
which would have showed you the solution.
