1st ROBOT
« on: June 05, 2007, 03:42:17 PM »
Hi

I'm from Australia and I'm trying to build my 1st robot.

I'm a technology teacher so the mechanical and electrical bits are ok, but electronics and programming are all new.

Dick Smith is an Australian electronics company and is the page below examples of what I am building? Is the IC used the same as the Programmer from Digikey?

I am trying to start a class of robot builders at my school (Years 7 to 9 or 10)
Money is an issue for the faculty and the students. I've already spent $50 on the 2 servos. We have used Lego but wanted to build a real robot.

Thanks

Terry

Jaycar is also a popular store here

The programmer's from the link you provided is not compatible with the AVR as most of them are for the PIC.

I checked Jaycar and they have an AVR ISP programmer in kit form (check CAT. NO. KC5340). Also try Dontronics they have several programmers, this one in particular http://www.dontronics-shop.com/product.php?productid=16589&cat=307&page=1 (similar to the one from Sparkfun) would probably work.

:) You can actually build quite complex robots using the RCX or the newer NXT Legos.

There is another teacher in the forum you may be interested in collaborating with for advice:

Im kinda worried about letting kids use power tools -> one big advantage lego has :P

Thanks heaps

I'll investigate advice when I have more time (dance festival this week and next then reports). In the meantime I'm at [email protected] and live Wollongong, NSW. There is a LEGO robot meeting at Rosehill Race Track 23? 24? of this month. I will try and be there.

Thanks again

Terry
