Creating a battery charger

Is 500mAh ok for a battery charger or is it too high?

I have an adjustable charger that I can change the voltage to match the battery pack.  Is it ok if the voltage is +/- 1V of the battery pack you are supplying it to? Should I favor the +1 instead of the -1?

To charge a 6V battery, you'd typically wanna use something around 7V+. A fully charged 6V battery is *never* 6V, but some voltage higher than that.

When I charged the battery pack I did it with an 8V supply (closest to >6V I could find) and 500mA.

After the battery pack supplied 7V.  Is this normal at all?  It's a NiMH battery, I thought their voltage was supposed to be relatively constant...
