robot arm template?

The trouble I'm having is that the robots arm kits online have too many DOF and are heavy and large. Any suggestions for kits/plans for simple robot arms available online that have 2 DOF and aren't too heavy? I'm thinking of using the robot arm ideas in this sites admin video. And I'm wondering if anyone has replicated this
design with easy to find materials.
Any templates available?
This robot needs to fit into a 12"box.

Hello,
I am also making a robot arm from scratch and the materials are lighter than the kits. I used cardboard and Styrofoam to make the parts and it is very light! I suggest you try that! :-)
