Targeting System Ideas
« on: January 29, 2010, 05:13:30 PM »
I am looking for some information on targeting systems, not tracking systems.  I have been unsuccessful in finding any information on the web.  I thought I would try here.  I would rather not re-invent the wheel.

The concept I have is using a laser coupled with a color sensor.  The laser scans across the target right to left, then up and down and the center is found.  Could this work?  Has anyone done this or something similar?  Is there a better way?

I am thinking of modifying an RC tank that has an airsoft pellet system on it.  I want it to autonomously track, target and shoot colored target.

look at image recogniton? (fyi, I know very little about implementing it)

alternativly look at the wavefront algrithm, there is a tutorial somewhere in the robot tutorials, and adapt that to identify a target shape?

best ideas I have, the wavefront algorithm has some potential to be used on diffrent forms of sensors. depending on what you want to do.

I have seen it done with a camera like BlackFin or CMUcam and a sonar sensor. The idea is to do a clolor blob tracking with the camera that will return the contour box of the blob, the center of mass can be calculated and instructions can be given to the servos to point a laser dot in the middle of the blob. Of course, the guns will point in the same direction, but care has to be taken as the pellets may deviate from the straight line, you may need to compensate according to the distance (the sonar comes in handy for this purpose).
Check out the uBotino robot controller!

I would think that the Soccer plying robots are 'targeting' the goal.
