If the microcontroller for the 50$ tutorial is out of stock what is another good microcontoller i could buy close to the same budget.

Don't buy a TQFP package unless you have a pcb suitable for surface mounting.

For the 50$ 'bot you want a PDIP package like this: >CLICKY<

My son is trying to build the $50 tutorial robot.  This is the second attempt at trying to build something, so i am hoping to use parts from the first attempt.  Does anyone know if the servos in the parts list can be substituted with a Spektrum DSP75?  i already have four of those for use.

yeah those should work. you can substitute the servos in the parts list for almost any hobby servos. i have used some futabas and Mysteries and they have been fine.
