They are using multiple (film FX studio quality) cameras to track it, and a computer is flying it.

With that good of a control system, and no human errors involved, I bet it is very reliable.

It seems like there have been a few other video postings (including this) that are a few days behind when they are posted on DIYdrones. Guess news travels in circles.

wow, it's incredible! doesn't anyone of you get the creeps (mildly) when seeing how fast robotics is developing? when was the first working quadrotor? and now they're already doing acrobatics with it....  although i guess the high speed robotic hand also posted here somewhere gave me even more of the creeps.

Well if MadSci is correct and they are using an external system to control it it isnt a field ready design.
I guess if you wanted to set up a ton of high quality cameras around your target and ask them nicely not to move you can aggresively maneuver around them.

It's called research. I'm pretty sure there are many parts of this design that can be reused in "real life" application.

Pardon me, but I think it's more of a waste of resources....

UAVs flying through windows etc etc are useful... But anything but useful needing 10+ cameras to operate...
And we also don't know from the video the solution calculation time...

Thankfully today we have computers for a reason... That reason is making models and testing them in the computer...
And that goes for the kinematics....

Finally... Only if I see a fully autonomous UAV doing that with it's on board computer ONLY... I'll say...

Re. calculation time: it has to be real-time and closed-loop. You cannot pre-compute everything and expect your quadrotor to fly exactly as instructed.

Many research project seem useless and "just fun". For instance, the first planes were just "toys", only able to fly for a few meters. If the Wright brothers were trying to build a plane able to fly from LA to Tokyo with 500+ people on board, they wouldn't have been as successful

I really really doubt any normal cluster can calculate so many cameras almost real time... We talk about a lot of data....
And tones of math and processing...

I don't question weather they made a model or not... It's more than certain that they made a computer model...
What I said was that an indoor application doesn't have so many many unexpected variables thus, they could just model
it and not make that thousand dollar project for fun...

You are right... on that... Many inversions and breakthroughs came spontaneously for various unrelated researches...
Still... Sometimes... bobble-heading over an idea is bad.... vary bad.... endless examples...

The above was a good though but bad design that didn't work out as expected....

Building quadrotors isn't easy... It requires many things, effort etc etc etc etc....
With such power consumption it's nowhere near to practical...
And some other factors make other real life designs more "human"...

I'm sorry it's still getting to this but it's like missing the right orientation...
That's an American thing...

You make bombs that can strike a target within mm... Still... Laser defenses are more and more developed by the day...
That's a fail strategy...
For many many reasons...

You should be making something that can't really be deflected... we should make something innovating...

If someone builds a quadrotor then build something else... That has more advantages and less disadvantages...
Don't go over and over the same old idea...
