A conventional helicopter would be difficult because you'll need to be able to change the angle of attack of the main rotor, which means lots of mechanical stuff.

A quadrocopter would probably be easier.

Yeah, building a helicopter is hard, not as simple as motor here rotor there, like this
__________________main blade/rotor
                 | shaft
                ---
                |  | motor/engine
                ---__________________________(O)gyro of-set
              /     \
   _____/____\______landing gear
If you do it perfectly this will probably work.
If this is your first project, it'll be pretty hard.
Go with a quad-rotor like Cyberfish suggested

may i suggest a site? http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_index.asp it will help you with finding the motors, props, etc you will need for any UAV (helicopter, in your case) your gonna make.

Do you have any electronics knowledge at all? You do realise it will be more expensive to build it from scratch than to buy a cheap one?

If you really want to build an electric heli, I would suggest that you start with a propeller/motor/gear setup then build around it. You can still build the electronics and body, but I wouldn't start completely from scratch.

The reason you can't just can't just connect a motor to a blade is that your heli will just spin. That's makes it a little trickey.

Honestly, I've never done this, but I can imagine it would be a hard project to do if your just starting out.

I'd suggest buying one of the miniature ones, then using that as a guide to building your first one, then experiment from there.

I believe that's called the gyro effect.

if you wanted to build a conventional helicopter from scratch there is a heap of time and cost involved. not to mention experience that will be needed. if you were going to want to build a chopper you would want to at least have some previous experience with RC helies of some type.

there is a general rule of thumb in the RC hobby, for a decent starting platform finished, ready to go form the box will be cheaper than starting from scratch. this never used to be the case but in the recent years the price of RC stuff has dropped heaps.

now you come to the factor of stability. flying a helicopter is a hard task for anyone let alone getting it to fly by computer. it takes patience with constant subtle adjustments and for a first time electronics project it could be an extremely expensive exercise.

I too would recommend going with a Quadrocopter as it is a far more stable platform than a heli. it is still a difficult task as there are numerous people that i am aware of on this forum that are building quadrocopters. and from hearing there stories it is a very time consuming project and comes with many difficulties.

but to your original statement, if you want a mostly electronics project, go for a quadrocopter. you will spend to much time building and most likely repairing a heli.
