Modular is always a good idea. Nothing new there really.
Personally I enjoy more seeing things morphed to coolness from stuff folks find under the sink, etc.

They got 3 million grant to do more research on it.

IMO its gonna fail horribly, sure its modular but its still too limited for any real kind of use.

It is pretty cool stuff. I worked by them last summer, and made some pretty cool stuff. I made a bipedal robot:

The BugBot - BugBase goes Iron Man

I also did some stuff with SmartCards and RFID tags. Oh and some motor control stuff as well. Its a pretty strong platform, and extremely versatile. The BugBase was what got me started with embedded Linux and the whole " ssh into your robot to change your code" thing.

IIRC they do have one, or at least had one in development.
