Non-ultrasonic Sonar

I want to add sonar to my robot, but i have no cash to buy a module. Plus making my own is much more fun

I was wondering, have people made non-ultrasonic sonar for their robots? Is it possible and effective?

What is the best type of mic to plug into a MCU?

My reason for not using ultra sonic is i have no compatible mic or speaker.

I have made a non ultrasonic range finder and it was ok but it picked up a lot of interference.



and you do not use a mic or speaker you should use ultrasonic transducers.

you don't have $25??? Cause thats all they cost, and I guarantee you it would cost 2X that to make one that worked as well.

Yeh probs. I actually do have the money... but i though it might be more of an acheivement to build my own.

Plus id learn loads creating the firmware to handle the creation and detection of the sound.

Woah, i wouldn't even have a clue about starting off with this.

The ultrasonic ones are made out of a vibrating crystal of something right? Maybe i'm thinking of oscillators......

However, to make a transducer from scratch sounds very intricate.

perhaps you can hack a piezo buzzer?
