avrdude error.

Hi, i have an ATmega 88 and i'm not sure if it's not damaged, so i built an easy circuit with 2 LED's to test it and got this error from avrdude:

avrdude: stk500v2_command<>: command failed
avrdude: stk500v2_ReceiveMessage<>: timeout
avrdude: stk500v2_program_enable<>: bad STK600 connection status: unknown (0x64)
avrdude: initalization failed, rc=-1

as it is my first time programming MCU i dont know what the error means so my question is: does this mean that my ATmega88 is dead or i screwed smtn. up while programming it?
