Obstacle detector for indoor robot
« on: September 17, 2011, 03:19:17 PM »
Hi,

I'm looking for an obstacle detector with a 360-degree field of view, it can be a laser, radar or whatever it doesn't matter.

If we compare quality and price, the laser range finder Revo LDS looks pretty nice but I can't find it and I guess there are some new ones now.

Could you please named some of them  ?

Thanks

The Revo LDS triangulation-based rangefinder is not available for purchase separately, but getting a Neato XV-11 is still much cheaper than other time-of-flight based laser rangefinders. Of course, the Hokuyo/SICK laser rangefinders are more accurate, but the cost is quite prohibitive for most hobbyists.

If you just want 360 degrees of distance, and can afford slow speed, a Sharp IR rangefinder on a servo could give you that data for less than $30.

Thanks for your answer.

I need a 360-degree field of view and about 10 metres radius.

Do you think only expensive laser (such as Hokuyo) can do this ?
Is laser mandatory to do this job or another technology could do it ?

Hi,

Ultra-Sound should do.
Regards,
Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
Engineering is based on numbers - not adjectives
