Wireless Communication

Hello

I am about to start on a project to build a robot that can be controlled wirelessly by a remote control. I'm not quite sure how the best way to go about it would be. I would like to avoid running the controller through a laptop if possible; I was wondering if it would be possible to hack either a walkie-talkie set or a wiimote and use it to control the bot.
