Transforming Remote Controlled Robot

Hi Lads,

As part of my last year in University I am hoping to build a transforming robot. However I am having great difficulty planning out this robot, I feel that if I get a plan in place I will manage to build the robot however I again face another difficulty as I am unsure where to locate all the software required to manufacture the robot, I Know that it will be PIC controlled as I have experience using this equipment however I am unsure of sizes and power to use. Size of the robot Is bigger better or smaller better? I would be grateful of any guidance that you may have? Here is a link to a robot I aim to base my design on.
