Possible Frame Project
« on: May 23, 2012, 03:58:48 PM »
Hello! One summer project I'm working on involves building a robot that can transport drinks. However, I never designed a mechanical frame before, so I was wondering if anyone can take a look at it and tell me if I'll run into any possible problems.

Here's the frame I designed using sketchup

I'm using t slotted aluminum from the framing http://www.mcmaster.com/#t-slotted-framing/=hnx5ek

Dear Crazyengineer,

Looks ok to me.  Those slotted aluminum pieces have been pretty sturdy in my experience.  They also bolt together tightly, so it shouldn't wobble too much.
The only thing that I could imagine failing would be the plate on the bottom.  It you're planning on having that support weight you'll probably want some crossbars.  If it's a thin sheet held on by a few bolts, the bolts are liable to tear right through it if enough weight is put in the center.
