Re-Introduction
« on: July 31, 2012, 11:58:35 PM »
Hello all,

It's been a few years since I've been on this site. I just wanted to re-introduce myself, as I am hopefully back on a regular basis  :)

While I was away, I was working on my college education, raising my daughter, pursuing my career, and pursuing other hobbies.

I have received my BS in Computer Science, as well as my MS in Computer Science, specializing in software engineering from National University.
My daughter is now 7, and showing interest in robots as she had always seen my robot I built laying around collecting dust.
I had taken up two other hobbies, Home Automation (which is like turning your house into a robot, which can actually be useful), and iOS application development.
Two months ago, I ended my 7 year career as a unix system administrator, and began my dream job incorporating my two hobbies into a new career!
I am now an iOS application developer for SmartLabs, Inc. which designs home automation technology! http://www.smartlabsinc.com/

Anyway, getting back into robots....I've forgotten most of everything I knew, but I do remember doing most of it on a windows laptop. This time around I would like to do everything on a mac. I have downloaded Cross Pack, and started a project with it, implementing my $50 robot code...I guess I'm missing avrlib?

The programmer I have is an avrispmkII.

The robot has a Roboduino v1.01 MCU, with a ping sonar, sharp IR, and XBee (I re-call implementing over-the-air firmware upgrades using a bootloader)

I was pretty much up to speed on things a few years ago, but now I am wondering what is new in the hobby robotics world???

Is it realy that long ago?
Oh well, how time goes by... Welcome back anyway :)

My condolences ;)

Not much... And then again... Lots of cheap boards turning up everywhere, from the hopeless to the very advanced, and microcontrollers are constantly packing more punch for less, but not much change in neither actuators nor sensors, so you'll be up to speed in no time.
Regards,
Søren

A rather fast and fairly heavy robot with quite large wheels needs what? A lot of power?
Please remember...
