Can I get a heavy duty arm setup (arm + controller + effector) for < $2k.  I?m also willing to consider a Cartesian setup of some sort, although haven't found prices on those yet so don?t know if I'd save going that way.

If your trying to create a robotic painting machine my suggestion is this:

A printer.

lol jk,

look at CNC machines.  You can home build them with varying degrees of accuracy and see where it takes you.

Mind you though, painting is a *VERY* delicate proccess
