i want to upgrade my $50 robot

hellow.....i want to ask is there any other sensor which can work like sharp ir rangefinder or is there any way to make it by your self because i am not getting  (sharp ir rangefinder) the shopkeepere gives me two bulbs (like LED) one is blue in colour and another is black in colour and he says these are the sensors which are written here...


so if someone can help me please reply....

Typically, the way those sensors work is that one of them emits IR, and the other detects IR and changes resistance by how much IR it detects.

The draw-back of those is that, typically, the range is measured in millimeters, not meters like with the higher-end Sharp IR sensors.

Note that the Sharp ones are range finders. The $50 robot is supposed to be a "photovore" -- sense how much light there is, not how far away something is.
