Programming and cotrolling virtual robots
« on: November 23, 2013, 08:37:15 AM »
Hello Society of Robots,

We are currently working on an online multiplayer game in which players program virtual robots that will then fight each other in a simulated virtual world. The robots cannot be controlled directly during the fight, their performance will depend solely on your programming skills. You have to code your way to victory.

It's a web-based platform so you'll be able to play it directly from your browser any time you want.

The platform is called Hack Arena and it will work similar to a sports league. You'll be able to participate in tournaments as well as in friendly matches against other players. You will have the chance to turn your hobbies into a hardcore action sport. Even engineers can become athletes :-)

We really want to hear your opinion about this concept. Looking forward to receiving your feedback.

Regards,

The Hack Arena team

Is this the same version (python based) that was on Hacker News a week ago, with a 19x19 grid based circular arena?

If so, I found that one to be a little too grid-ey -- sensors could only sense neighboring cells; movement was in discrete grid coordinates; etc. What I like about robotics is the free-form physicality of it, which you'd need a physics engine to properly simulate on a computer.

Sounds pretty sweet. Here is an idea how about having failure rate incorporated into different parts of the robots. If you push your robot too hard it may get more power but it will have a higher chance of failing. Are you going over the top with cool weapons like EMP or is it a more realistic simulation?

Hi jwatte,

Sorry for the late response. No, it's not the same game. In our version the grid is going to be much larger than 19x19 and the robot will be able too see beyond the neighboring cells. We plan to support both python and js as programming languages for the robot. We also plan to add graphical programming(dragging, dropping and connecting blocks of logic) and also training the robots by example(using machine learning).

Thanks for your inquiry,

The Hack Arena Team
