science papers on robotics, free!
«
on:
October 17, 2006, 10:18:07 AM »
I paid for access to the
IEEE Explore database
.
If anyone wants any particular paper (relating to robots), just tell me which one and I can upload it to SoR for anyone to download. Ill have this subscription until mid-summer of 2007.
They have a search feature to find what you want . . .
Also, if you find a neat paper that you think many people might like, also point that out! Survey papers are best though, as they summarize the most important stuff.

Any thing on local path planning and object avoidace for Ackerman steering would be great!

You will have to be much more specific than that
There wont be much on Ackerman steering, but there are a billion papers out there based on local path planning and object avoidance. Ill look for a survey/review paper on it that gives some good info . . .
You should search and find a specific paper you want. If the abstract seems interesting, just send me the info and I'll get it.
Oh, FYI, all uploaded papers will be placed on the
robot theory
page.

Just a warning, if you haven't already you ought to make certain the license you bought to access the articles includes the right to redistribute them. It wouldn't do to have this site shut down for copyright infringement!

I actually thought of that, and read their copyright stuff. They talk about reprinting hardcopies, but mention nothing about online distribution. They say all reprinting of all papers is 100% OK if these two conditions are met:
The paper is reproduced in its entirety, 100% unmodified.
They are informed of the reprint - but their informing consent page mentions nothing of online distribution . . . sigh, IEEE is behind the times . . .
This leads me to believe they have no interest in shutting me down . . . its free advertising for them, no? They get like 40k papers/year added to their database, but I probably wont share more than say 30 of them on this site.
Anyway, the papers do not actually belong to IEEE, but the authors themselves. If I write a paper and IEEE publishes it, I would still own 100% rights to the paper. I would want my paper to be freely distributed . . .
to IEEE: If I guessed horribly horribly wrong with the above statement, contact me ASAP! Otherwise I declare fair use rights.

As always you continue to be an amazing source of information.
would you be able to post these articles.

ok I fail.
So IEEE says I have access to:
• All AbstractPlus records
• IEEE Robotics and Automation Transactions Package
• Full Text of the following publications:
- IEEE Spectrum
- Robotics, IEEE Trans on
- Robotics and Automation Magazine, IEEE
- Device and Materials Reliability, IEEE Trans on
- Distributed Systems Online
- Potential Magazine
Its wonderful how they block all access to anything else for no reason at all . . . bbllaaahhhh.
So they wont let me download "A survey of camera self-calibration" and I couldnt find it in a google search either
There were only 3 ackerman steering papers, only one would be useful, but they wouldnt let me download that either
And you forgot to include the paper title for the other request . . .
Looking it up it says 'Design of an inexpensive waterproof housing' but cant get that one either . . . and again, couldnt find it on google. It says it was part of a student presention, so probably not that good.
But I think though, if its not even available online, not even the authors own homepage, then its probably not very good of a paper anyway
sorry!!!
anyway ill create a new page on the
theory page
that says 'user requests'

Sure, ill have a look at it.
I usually shy away from heavy math papers though for a few reasons:
Most people who come to this site arent experts.
I suck at math. Other people do too.
Engineers want results, not proofs.
People who write papers think they look smart by writing huge incomprehensible equations
I like papers that have good pictures, and describe clear and useful ideas. I like survey/review papers most as this is what they do.

Hey Admin,
I'd like to get a copy of the article here:
http://ieeexplore.ieee.org/Xplore/login.jsp?url=/iel5/100/35300/01678141.pdf?isnumber=&arnumber=1678141
if you don't mind...
Thanks,
Jon
here you go (2mb):
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robottheory/SIFT-ing_through_features_with_ViPR.pdf
interesting . . .
"Summary: Recent advances in computer vision have given rise to a robust and invariant visual pattern recognition technology that is based on extracting a set of characteristic features from an image. Such features are obtained with the scale invariant featur..."
Also, apparently IEEE is being annoying again . . . it turns out that if you pay for a year membership during the middle of the year, you only get a half year membership
I will be renewing my RAS/IEEE membership, but probably not the additional $40 in journal subscriptions. Its too big a rip off
The point of this rant is . . . get what you can from me now while it lasts!

Sonny, thanks! Yea I decided not to renew my access (just my membership). All I have access to now is the the IEEE Robotics and Automation Magazine - it comes with the membership
Although I do hear IEEE is
considering
giving full Xplore access to all paid IEEE members in the next year or two . . . that would be sweet . . .
At the moment I dont have a user upload for pdfs . . . but you know, that sounds like a good idea, Ill look into it and let everyone know.
(I sent you an email so you can give it to me for upload)
When I get it, this link should work:
http://www.societyofrobots.com/robottheory/A_Survey_of_Camera_Self-Calibration.pdf
Surveys are generally the best papers for SoR, cause it cuts right down to the point.

Instead of the IEEE Xplore you can find great variety of papers for many interesting topics in this site
