[2008] - Spykee Robot
« on: December 06, 2007, 09:15:42 AM »

Meccano is all set to unveil a WiFi-controlled, Erector-branded robot kit. The Spyke certainly improves on Meccano's earlier metallic attempts at robot sets: this little fella is capable of feeding a webcam video stream to a PC over the aforementioned wireless connection, as well as climbing stairs with its triangular tank-track; that's right parents, your staircase can no longer keep your kids safe.

These basic specs combined with the teaser image, above, should be enough to perk up the ears of all the consumer robot enthusiasts out there.

* MP3 player
* Wi Fi
* VOIP phone and webcam
* Responds to commands from a Web page
* Climbs stairs
* IR auto-parking recharging system.

very cool... but I do think it is a bit ironic that they are "selling" so many of the features that are available for free with software like RoboRealm!

I'm kind of curious why you think it can climb stairs? There's nothing in the video to that effect, and I can't imagine looking at it how it would accomplish that...

hey how much do you think it would cost to buy on eBay in the future

This looks like a good toy to hack for your own projects.

Check out the Roboduino, Arduino-compatible board!

It doesn't look very meccano-isch, I mean it's just a plastic toy.
Too bad because I like fully modifyable stuff...

But it looks cool though, I suspect many robotics hobbyists will buy one to mod it.
It has potential with that wifi already built in, because you can probably mod it to use that wifi for your own modifications too.
