helicopters are pretty hard to make from scratch  :-\

yes you can use the r/c controller from the car but not the motors.
You need to calculate the torque of the motor and the rotor width.

I shouldnt think that you could use anything but the transmitter/receiver, and even then its unlikely to have enough channels for a helicopter (you need at least 3. 1 for up/down. 1 for turn left/right. 1 for forward/backward)

He probably does have a controller with 3 channels on it. But unless im mistaken, you were asking if you could use parts from a cheap $10 radio controlled car. The car will not have a 3 channel remote I guarantee it, I would even be surprised if the remote control unit operates with pots most likely it will just be metal plates giving only the option of full speeds or no speeds. Totally useless for a helicopter

for a heli you need at least 3 or 4 channels. 3 channels if you plan on having a gyro on it and 4 if you gonna try to do it yourself

you engineers and your calculating  ::)

if you are that much of a cheap!@# you COULD get rotors, take the motor and put it on a gear reduction unit with adjustable pinions,if your motor hits full rpm and seems like it could go faster, use a higher pinion, if the motor is getting too hot, use a lower pinion, however, this thing WONT stay level on any of the 3 axis, you need a balence and control system for that, a tail rotor, and either a coaxial blade or a variable pitch mechanism... all in all, save up 200$ and buy yourself a nice electric rc helicopter

SmAsH . . . you should focus on just one robot idea at a time . . . I see too many of yours in the forum ;)

Ironically, a quadrotor copter would probably be easier to build since you don't need the cyclic control mechanisms. But lets see if you can afford 3 gyros and 2 accelerometers plus 4 brushless motors with motor controllers.

I dont think a 12 year old can afford all that  :o

I don't want to hijack this thread but do you really need 4 gyros and 2 accelerometers for a Quadricopter? Also couldn't you just use 4 'helicopter' servos from servo city?

lol I forgot this thread was about copters

you need gyros for balancing the heli on each corner so you know how much thrust each propeller must be giving , 4 helicopter servos ... maybe gotta calculate the rotor length etc. before building a heli, and i doubt smash will make this heli

OMG ed I was cracking up,  you know what , ed we need a webpage or thread devoted to all this funny pics we have posted in response to Smash's comments, so it will be available for any other memeber who would like to use a pic to prove a point , lol.

you could probably do with 1 3d accelerometer and 2 gyros (you can get 1 accelerometer and 1 gyro built into the same package).

2 gyros mounted at the center of the heli can do the same as 1 on each corner.

Another idea to reduce costs would be a tri - rotor system in the shape of a triangle

that is totally wrong!!!! connectors , every passive component you could imagine ,and you could sell RAM online, hardrives online , etc.
with one computer I scavengede, I have taken so many connectors and SOOOO many sockets and capacitors, and switches, etc.

what happened to 20- 40 bucks an hour?

look at the really cheap helicopters.  you only need 2 controls.  up/down, left/right.  forward is handled by being balanced a little nose heavy, reverse is handled by turning around.  These toys are actually alot of fun for the $15 -$30 US.  For the same price as getting something you have to re-engineer (car), you can buy a finished product that is going to work better for the same money.
