Motor Controller needed?

Hi friends,

I am new to robotics and I need some assistance.

I am developing a university project on robotics. I am using 12V DC Motors (4 pieces) for wheeled locomotion. I will be using a PIC microcontroller with probably PICBasic or C as the software language. I need to know:

At present, I need a motor controller to control the motors? or the microcontroller is enough to control all the 4 motors? Please help me with this, i have searched enough with no luck.

microcontrollers cannot control motors directly

You need something called an H-Bridge ( search google and this forum , there is tons about it).

There are H-Bridges in chips like the L298 that karmax mentioned, or you could make your own H bridge with transistors.

Also, for your robot , I advise you to use only two motors and a caster ( or two). This makes less frictio. But it depends on your application. What do you want this robot of yours to do?
