This solidworks have a lot of gray icons
Is this solidworks, works well?

Those features are disabled while while you're in that mode.  As soon as you insert a part, the "Insert Component" thingy will close and you'll be in default assembly mode...  Most of the icons will then be re-enabled.

An Assembly is a bunch of parts and (sub)assemblies in one file.  To start out, you need to create individual parts first.
